Day 2: Can you build a torch that lights up?

STEAM Challenge: Can you build your own Olympic torch?

Materials: Flashlight or LED Tea Light,  Cardboard Tube, Tape, Tissue Paper

Adult Prep: Arrange the materials and allow your child to construct their own torch.    olympic torch process

Here is how we did it but let your child create their own way!

First, we noticed that the cardboard tube was bigger than the light.  We problem solved by cutting the tube vertically and then taping it around the light.

Next, we taped on layers of tissue paper to represent the flame (this was also great practice at tearing tape).

I love how each child added their own style to the torch. My six year old molded the tissue paper to be a more traditional shape while my five year old only wanted to use red tissue paper. I also was able to modify the activity for my two-year-old to make her own torch.

Once the torches were lit… it led to an afternoon of creative play with the torches.
