This creative kid activity was inspired by the new book, Action Art.
Action Art, written by MaryAnn Kohl and Barbara Zaborowski, is a hands-on guide to fun and engaging ways to create art with kids.
From painting with bubble wrap to riding trikes through paint to painting with a drill, you will find lots of activities that not only encourage your child’s creativity but also explore new paint techniques while having fun.
One of my favorite features of the book is the icon to guide the prep time of the activity for adults.
As a busy mom of 3…. time is valuable! I would rather spend more time creating art than having to prep the activity.
With the easy to read icons you can easily identify an activity based on how much time you have available.
We recently moved to a new house and have an abundance of cardboard and bubble wrap. After seeing the Bubble Wrap Boots activity in the book I knew we had to try that activity first.
In Action Art, Kohl and Zaborowski give detailed step by step directions on how to set up and let your child experiment with the art activity. I also enjoyed the suggestions they gave as extensions of the activity.
We were inspired by the Bubble Wrap Boots activity in the book but we did throw our own “twist” on it.
I have previously been working with M-Woww (4 years old) on recognizing her left and right hands, which reminded me of the old family game, Twister, and sparked the idea to combine Twister and Bubble Boots! Read our full tutorial below.
BUBBLE WRAP PAINT, STOMP AND TWIST
Materials:
Cardboard or large banner paper
4 Colors of Paint (We used washable tempera paint)
4 Paper plates
Bubble wrap
Tape
Spinner (Download our free printable DIY spinner boards: color version | blank version)
Scissors
Straight Pin
Adult Prep: I always recommend prepping the paint activity first before introducing the activity to your child.
First, assemble your spinner (click here to download our free spinner printable). Cut out the arrow and trim the spinner board. Attach the arrow to the center of the board with a straight pin.
Second, prepare the paint and canvas. Pour one color of paint on each paper plate. We used cardboard as our canvas and I suggest laying down a drop cloth underneath to protect your work area.
BUBBLE WRAP PAINT & STOMP
Step 1: Designate one person to be the “spinner” and one person to be the “painter”.
Step 2: Wrap the painter’s feet and hands with bubble wrap and secure with tape.
Step 3: Spin the arrow to dictate which color and hand or foot to start the painting.
For example, if the arrow lands on left foot green then the painter would stick their left foot in the green paint and begin to paint on to the cardboard canvas with their left foot.
Step 4: Repeat as much as you wish. Once the canvas is filled let it dry and then admire your masterpiece.
Always remember the process, rather than final product, is what is important. There is no wrong way to create!
Let your child lead the activity.
For example, my son has sensitive ears and did not prefer the sound of the bubble wrap popping. He simply slipped off the bubble wrap and continued with his bare hands and feet (just be prepared to wash hands and feet after the activity).
CLEAN UP: Take off the bubble wrap and wipe up any spilled paint. Since most of the paint is on the bubble wrap, it was very easy to clean up for us.
