Creating art does not always have to involve a big mess or a lot of time. Here is an easy art project for kids that involves two materials you most likely already have…cookie cutters and markers! This project requires a steady hand but is a great way to further develop fine motor control in kids through repetition and pattern.
Pattern is an element that is repeated in a reoccurring arrangement (like red, blue, yellow, red, blue, yellow) Repetition is one object that is repeated. In this project your child will be repeating the cookie cutter shape (repetition) while creating a pattern with a selected group of colors.
Materials
Cookie Cutter, Paper, Pencil, Markers
Tutorials
Step 1: Select your cookie cutter shape to use as a stencil. Place the cookie cutter in the middle of the paper and trace around the outside of it with pencil.
Step 2: Outline your shape in marker.
Step 3: Continue to repeat the shape with different color markers. Create a pattern by repeating the same group of colors. A younger artist may wish to use only 3-4 colors while the older artist may wish to create a more complex pattern with additional colors.
Step 4: Continue to repeat the shape and pattern until the paper is filled. Your artist may wish to go back and add color and detail to the original shape.
