Books are a great way to inspire creative thinking especially for preschoolers. Keep your young learner engaged by letting them create their own game inspired by a favorite book.

We had the opportunity to review the book, Spot A Lot Vehicle Adventure written by Steve Smallman and illustrated by Nicola Slater.
The story takes you on an adventure as a delivery guy is trying to deliver a package but his truck breaks down and he has to take different modes of transporation to get the package delievered.
Inspired by the book ,we created our own hands on game…. sparking an afternoon of creative thinking!
What to know if we enjoyed the book? (click play)
By the sounds of the laughter hopefully you can tell this book became an instant favorite in our house.
Lil B and M-Woww have always enjoyed the hide and seek type books so I was fairly confident that they would enjoy this one.
Along the delivery adventure, your child can count along with the different cars, trucks, trains, helicopters and more!
My two children really enjoyed trying to find the dog on each page.
To be honest, I am not sure what the dog had to do with delivering the package but he tagged along on the delivery adventure and was the favorite part of the book for Lil B and M-Woww.
What I enjoyed is that there are other prompts to find things on each page making it a great book for reading to different ages. Lil B enjoyed the challenge of trying to find the other objects….as well as the dog.
To extend your child’s creative thinking use the book as inspiration to create a game.
We are often inspired to create by different books we read like Spookley the Square Pumpkin and The Nose that Knows.
This time I presented the creative challenge of creating a game based on the book. Lil B quickly accepted this challenge.
PARENT TIP: Let your child led the activity. You may ask questions to prompt your child’s thinking but let them create their own game.
Read below to see what game Lil B created!
“FIND THE DOG” GAME
Created by Lil B
Materials:
Cars, Trucks, and Trains
Small Dog (borrowed from his sister’s dollhouse)
at least 2 people needed for the game
Directions:
One person hides the dog among the vechicles while the other person is not looking. Once the dog is hidden the other person tries to find the dog.
This kept my two children engaged for quite awhile as they tried to hide the dog back and forth.
Eventually it lead to taking the dog on the back of the dump truck for a new adventure but I loved how one book could spark a whole afternoon of creative thinking and exploration!
TECHNOLOGY EXTENSION: Take photographs of hiding the dog in different places. Print out the photographs and bind together to create your own hide-n-seek book.
Share with us your favorite picture book that helped inspire a creative game!
