Easy Engineering for Preschoolers with Magnetic Letters

Play, design, and build with alphabet letters!

Engineering for preschoolers does not have to be complicated or require expensive materials. You can use common classroom supplies to create your own low prep creative challenges for children. You only need three materials for this steam activity!

Engineering challenges teach children how to think creatively and learning to be problem solvers. These skills are essential for the future.

Easy Engineering for Preschoolers

By incorporating engineering activities at the preschool level is one way we can help prepare our children for an unknown future.

We don’t know what future technologies lay ahead but we can prepare our children to be innovative thinkers!

Read below to see how to get started with preschool engineering and build your own Alphabet Stack!

Engineering for Kids with No prep

Engineering challenge: How tall can you stack the alphabet letters?

Materials: Alphabet Letters, Play dough, Unifex Cubes (or measuring tape)

Engineering for Kids Easy Set Up

I always recommend allowing time for your child to play with material first. Most likely, your child will want to smash the letters into the playdough. Let your child experiment and learn through play with the materials.

Once your child has had time to explore, then introduce the challenge.

Challenge your child to see how tall they can build a tower of alphabet letters.  Remember with STEAM challenges there is no wrong way to do this activity. Some children may lay the letters flat and build. That is okay! It is about the process of building, designing and creating that is important.

Use open-ended questions like “how you can make your alphabet tower even taller? to extend your child’s thinking.
