“Add” Your Garden

“Add” your Garden

Originally this activity was going to be a flower sensory bin but instead we turned it into a fun math game that challenged both my two year old and my four year old. Together we came up with this game but my 4 year old really took charge. I love child-directed play! It was wonderful to watch them play and work together. Read the tutorial below to see how we turned fake flowers and dice into a math game for preschoolers with different levels of math skills.

Fun Math Game for Preschoolers

Materials:

Fake Flowers (We found ours at the Dollar Store)

Bin or Vase

Floral Foam

Decorative Rocks  (We reused the rock and bean mix from our Dinosaur Sensory Bin)

Newspaper

Dice (We used one big foam die from the Dollar Store)

Tutorial:

Step 1: Place floral foam in bin or vase.

Step 2: Stuff with newspaper around the edges so you need less rocks to fill it up.

Step 3: Add Flowers

Game:

We created our own fun math game with the flowers. My two year old would start by rolling the die and matching the number of flowers in the bin to the number on the die. My four year old would then roll the die and have to either add flowers or subtract to match the number he rolled. It was a great introduction to addition and subtraction for him. This activity kept them busy for awhile and was fun to watch.
