The Gift Of Nothing

What do you get the person who has everything? I don’t want to spoil the end of the story but the answer is NOTHING! The Gift of Nothing written by Patrick McDonnell is a fun read about Mooch the cat who is trying to think of a gift for his good friend, Earl the dog. However, Earl has everything and Mooch can’t think of what to get him. In the end they find spending quality time together is what is most important.

As we are headed into the holiday season, I found this story as a great reminder for my children about what is truly important. For our activity we wrapped up a box of nothing to give to someone special! They thought this was pretty funny. I let them select a person they wish to give a special gift of nothing. We found the perfect size box and I let them decorate and wrap the box. Our box was not completely empty as I encouraged them to draw a picture of a time they enjoyed most with the person they selected to receive the gift. We will be mailing these out to our special people. Read below for our tutorial on how we made our Gifts of Nothing!

Love books that help us all remember that Christmas is not all about “stuff”.
