Put a new twist on creating handmade ornaments with your young artist and be inspired by the fine artist Wassily Kandinsky. Christmas crafts for kids can be educational and fun. Introduce your child to the world of abstract art with Kandinsky and have fun with circles!
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian artist born in 1866. He was known as a leader in the field of Abstract art. Abstract art is using color and shapes that don’t look like real objects. Kandinsky used color and shapes to show emotion and was greatly influenced by music.
Why introduce young artists to Kandinsky?
By observing abstract works of art like Kandinsky, young artists learn that art does not have to be only about creating objects that look real. Art sometimes is about experimentation and looking at things in a new way.
We used Kandinsky’s painting, Squares with Concentric Circles, 1913 for inspiration for our project. To learn more about Kandinsky check out his biography on makingartfun.com
Materials
Colored Paper (any paper will work we used scrapbook paper and recycled magazine pages).
3 Different size circle objects to trace (large, medium, small)
Pencil, Scissors, Glue Stick, Hole Punch, Ribbon
Ornament Tutorial
Step 1: Select 3 pieces of colored paper.
Step 2: Trace and cut one large circle, one medium size circle and one smaller size circle.
Step 3: Glue the medium circle on to the large circle. Glue the small circle onto the medium circle.
Step 4: Punch a hole at the top of the circle and insert the ribbon.
Step 5: Tie the ribbon in a knot and hang on the tree!
We also made gift tags! Punch two holes on either side of the large circle and string with ribbon.
Kandinsky Inspired Artwork
We had so much fun making our ornaments we made a lot {and I mean a lot} of Kandinsky inspired circles and created two different types of artwork. First we experimented laying them out in rows similar to Kandinsky’s work of art but Lil B wanted to create a Christmas tree. It was fun to play and create with circles. Let your child lead the project and come up with their own design.
