Toddler art projects can be fun and a great way to work on their fine motor skills. This project is an easy way to paint with your toddler inspired by the Fine Artist, Claude Monet. Toddlers should be introduced to a variety of art materials (in a safe way). This activity will have your young artist using a sponge to recreate Monet’s impressionistic painting technique. Step 1: Prep materials before sitting with your young artist. Tape your paper to your work surface and create a tape resist by putting tape on the paper where you wish the bridge to be. We taped ours towards the middle of the paper. I suggest painter’s tape so that it will peel of easily when finished.
Step 2: I showed my young artist Claude Monet’s painting, Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies. We discussed what colors he used and what colors make up the water, flowers and sky.
Step 3: I demonstrated to my child how to use the sponge brush, by stamping up and down on the paper (remember to demonstrate on your own paper not your child’s paper). I encourage you to demonstrate the brush but also let your artist experiment and use the brush to make different paint marks. This is suppose to be fun…let them have some fun!
Step 4: Let the painting dry and then carefully peel of the painter’s tape.
