Calling all Octonauts! Captian Barnacles has a mission. Can you help explore the midnight zone and help document the creatures that live there?
Create a collaborative mural to explore the different ocean zones and the sea creatures who live there.
Create a Tissue Paper Mural of the Ocean Zones
Materials: Various shades of Blue Tissue Paper, Glue, Water, Paintbrushes, Window, Glass Door
Step 1: Discuss the different zones of the ocean. This site has a great visual showing the various types of animals are found in the different zones of the ocean. https://www.nwf.org/Kids/Ranger-Rick/Animals/Mixture-of-Species/Ocean-Animals.aspx
Compare and contrast the different zones and take a look at some creatures that live in the deepest darkest zones.
Step 2: Sort the tissue paper from darkest to lightest color. Discuss why the bottom zones are so dark (no sunlight).
Step 3: Create your mural. Tear pieces of tissue paper and place directly on your window. Paint over the top of the tissue paper with a mixture of glue and water (2:1 ratio).
Step 4: Create your ocean creatures to go on your mural. Research different types of sea animals and which zone they live in. Complete your challenge for Captain Barnacles!
Step 5: Glue or tape your sea creatures to your mural.
Don’t forget to invite parents, teachers or other students to see your collaborative ocean mural!
MURAL TIPS:
Be sure to use the washable school glue and the mural will easily wash off your window.
If you can’t apply the tissue paper directly to the window try taping a large piece of contact paper and create your mural by applying the tissue paper on the sticky contact paper.
Do not use bleeding color tissue paper. You want to use the regular cheap tissue paper that does not bleed color.
Have the children rotate working on the tissue paper and creating their sea creatures.
Science Extension: Research sea creatures who live in the midnight zone.
Technology Extension: What tools do people need to explore the deep parts of the ocean?
Engineering Extension: Can you build a Gup for the Octonauts that can travel to the midnight zone out of recyclable materials?
Art Extension: Draw your favorite midnight zone sea creature with colored chalk on black paper.
Math Extension: Count how many sea creatures are on your mural? Compare how many you have in each zone.
