Geometric Robot Stuffed Pillow

Combine robots and sewing for the perfect combination to engage and challenge your child skills. Sewing helps develop your child’s fine motor skills (small muscle control) and is a great next step from preschool lacing cards or lacing beads.

Materials:

2 pieces of lightweight Canvas

Cookie Sheet

Markers

Paper

Permanent Markers (or fabric markers)

Tape

Thread

Needle

Stuffing or Newspaper

Tutorial

Step 1: Discuss with your child geometric shapes such as a square, circle, triangle and rectangle. Use markers and paper to design a robot made of geometric shapes.

Step 2: Cut two pieces of canvas the same size.  Tape 1 piece of canvas tightly to the cookie sheet.

Step 3: Draw your robot on the canvas with the permanent marker. Use your paper sketch as reference.

(Be sure to protect your workspace as the permanent marker will bleed through the canvas)

Step 4: Once the robot design is finished, place it on top of the second sheet of canvas fabric and cut around the robot with both pieces of canvas.

Step 5: Use needle and thread to sew together the two pieces of canvas.

Before you sew all the way around the pillow stop and stuff with pillow stuffing or newspaper, then continue to sew around the pillow.

Fine Motor Skills: Add dots around the edge of the fabric for your child to push the needle through on the dots.
