Many of our favorite art projects are inspired from books. We have done a lot of Halloween crafts for kids but Lil B and M-Woww had a lot of fun with this simple drawing activity based on the book, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin written by Joe Troiano and illustrated by Susan Banta.
Spookley the Square Pumpkin is now an instant favorite at our house. I think I already read it 3 times today alone. We used the story and illustrations to inspire us to draw and create our own shape filled pumpkin patch.
We have included several different ways you can adapt this lesson for children of various ages. This makes it easy if you are working with several different ages or skill sets. Read below for our suggestions on working with toddlers, preschoolers and school age children.

Creative Drawing Challenge:
Draw your own Spookley Inspired Pumpkin Patch
Step 1: Read the story together.
Step 2: Discuss the pumpkin patch at the end of the story and have your child spot the different shapes and colors of the pumpkins.
Step 3: Draw your own Spookley pumpkin patch.
Toddlers and Young Preschoolers
Use our free printable of different shape pumpkins to help get your young artist started. Let them chose what color they wish to make their pumpkins and add faces and details (and of course googley eyes are always a fun detail to add)!
Preschoolers
Encourage your preschooler to draw their own garden using their favorite shapes for pumpkins. Lil B had more fun drawing his own than using the pre-drawn pumpkin sheet.
School Age
Challenge your school age child by drawing three-dimensional shape pumpkins. Turn triangular prisms, cubes, spheres, or rectangular prisms into pumpkins. To help get started click here for our how to draw a cube sheet.
Drawing Tips
• Reference the illustrations in the book. I had the book on the table for Lil B and M-Woww to look at as they created their drawings.
• Look at a real pumpkin
• Questions to ask your child:
What shape are your pumpkins?
What color are your pumpkins?
What other things would you see in a pumpkin patch?
What does the ground look like?
What does the sky look like?
What type of weather is it?
