Recycled Book Art Sculptures

Book art sculptures are a great way to reuse wonderful old hardcover books. Three dimensional building is always fun especially with an easy sculpture project like this one.

I love books…much to my husband’s dismay. He complained about them every time he helped me move to a new apartment before we were married (but he still married me…and I still have most of the books). This project is a favorite of mine because it gives new life to an old book. I have done this project with a variety of young artists at the elementary level. Little ones can help too with some direction and help.

 Materials:

Old hard covered book

Pencil or bone folder  (optional)

Tutorial:

Step 1: Open to the first page of the book. Take the bottom corner and fold up to the middle towards the spine of the book, creating a diagonal along the edge.

Step 2: On the next page, take the top right hand corner and fold down to the center of the book.

Step 3: Repeat until all the pages have been folded.

Step 4 (optional): Use a pencil or bone folder to crease the folds of your pages.

This best part of this project is there is no wrong way to fold the pages. Experiment with different folds to create different looks. To display hang on the wall or set on a shelf.

How interesting. We might have to try it with one of our old books!
