THE NOSE THAT KNOWS
“The Nose That Knows” is a story about a dog, Milo that goes on an exciting out-of-this world adventure based on the different smells his nose…. knows.
While Milo has some fun experiences along the way… {spoiler alert} he finds his way home following the smell of his favorite food.
Lil B (5) and M-Woww (3) enjoyed the story and had fun discussing what type of smells we do smell.
Lil B’s favorite part in the story was about Milo flying to the moon in his rocket ship. While, M-Woww liked that Milo made it back home at the end of his adventure.
The story was entertaining and the illustrations provided great visual prompts for our conversations and inspiration for Lil B and M-Woww to create their own visual smelly story!
After reading the book, we discussed our own favorite foods and which foods had yummy smells like, chocolate chip cookies baking in oven.
Inspired by their favorite smells, Lil B and M-Woww went to work creating their own version of the story. They both created their own dog and illustrated what adventures their dog created while following his nose.
Creative Challenge: Create and illustrate your own adventure about following your favorite food smells.
Materials
2 Sheets of White Paper
Clear Tape
Colored Pencils (or other drawing materials)
Tutorial
Step 1: Read the book and discuss your favorite food smells.
Step 2: You may wish to draw on a single white sheet of paper but we decided to create an accordion book to showcase our full illustrated smelly adventures.
How to Make an Accordion Book: Fold each paper in half. Tape the two sheets of white paper together along the short side. Fold the book together back and forth like an accordion.
Step 3: Draw your favorite smells and illustrate your story.
Encourage your child to stretch their thinking by asking open-ended questions. Ask questions like, “what happens next” or “how would you draw that smell”.
Activity Extension: Cook together a favorite food and record the different smells you experience as you cook the recipe together.
Reading to your child is such an important factor in children’s future success. Extend your child’s knowledge and creative thinking by creating activities based on their favorite books.
