Put a “spinning” twist on this fun painted candy cane ornament for kids.
Inspired by the book, The Legend of the Candy Cane: The Inspirational Story of Our Favorite Christmas Candy written by Lori Walburg we set out to create our own version of a candy cane. The book tells the story of how the candy cane came to be, while this book is a work of fiction it has a great message to tie the meaning of candy cane to the meaning of Christmas. If you celebrate Christmas in a different way you can skip reading the book and go straight to the activity.
We used our Spin Art machine to create a paper candy cane ornament. It was fun to watch the drops of paint swirl as the force of the machine created fun spiral patterns. If you don’t have a spin art machine you can also use a salad spinner for the same effect.
Spin Art Candy Cane Ornament for Kids
Materials: Spin Art Machine (or Salad Spinner), White Paper, Red Paint, Scissors, Hole Punch, String
Step 1: Cut your paper to fit inside your spin art machine, ours uses 4 x 4 square papers. To get started gently squeeze the paint as you spin the machine.
Experiment with different types of pressure to squeeze the paint. How does that change your pattern?
Try spinning the machine fast or slow. How does that change your pattern?
Step 2: Once the paint has completely dried, cut a candy cane shape from your painted paper.
Step 3: Punch a hole at the top and add string to hang from your tree
You may wish to laminate your candy cane to preserve it and help it last longer!
