“97, 98, 99 …. 100… I did it! “
Learning to count to 100 doesn’t have to take place only during Math time.
Opportunities for hands-on play with different materials will allow your child to learn and extend their knowledge and creative thinking skills. This STEAM activity will help your child count to one hundred in an easy and hands-on way.
STEAM represents the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
No worksheets are needed for this Math and Art preschool activity. Help your child count to 100 in a fun way. Read the full tutorial below.
STEAM Challenge: Can you create a sculpture that holds 100 beads?
Materials: Pipe cleaners, Beads, Play dough or air dry clay
Step 1: Gather 10 pipe cleaners (we cut ours in half).
Step 2: Count and place 10 beads on each pipe cleaner. For the older child, discuss how ten groups of ten equal 100.
Step 3: Design your sculpture. Push your beaded pipe cleaner into the dough. Try twisting and turning the pipe cleaners to give a unique look.
As we added more beads and pipe cleaners the sculpture continuously changed how it looked. One twist or squish of a pipe cleaner could dramatically change the look of the sculpture.
What I found interesting is M-Woww (4 years old) pushed both ends of her pipe cleaners into the dough while Lil B (6 years old) only stuck in one end of the pipe cleaner.
Each artist had their own style of sculpture.
Science Connection: Collect 100 nature objects
Engineering Connection: What other types of structures can you build with pipe cleaners and beads?
Tech Connection: Photograph your sculpture from different angles. How does the same sculpture look different?
Art Connection: Draw a picture of your finished sculpture.
Math Connection: Use the beads to create a pattern on your pipe cleaner.
