When I Grow Up...A Digital Photo Challenge for Kids

Growing up, I wanted to be a fashion designer. However, my sewing skills did not take me very far.

I never envisioned that my career would take me to teaching and educating online. That was not even a possibility when I was young.

We don’t know what type of future job or technology will be available to our children. This is why STEAM activities are important to your child’s future.

STEAM thinking helps your child not only prepare for the unknown future but also helps your child build the unknown future!

This STEAM activity for kids combines drawing and technology to create a personalized work of art depicting what your child wants to be when they grow up.

It’s okay if your child picks an unrealistic profession to draw like an alien chaser…who knows maybe in the future that is what we need!

Materials: Paper, Drawing Materials, Digital Camera, Dress Up Clothes, Printer, Scissors, Glue

Step 1: Discuss with your child what they want to be when they grow up. Encourage your child to dream big. It’s okay if it isn’t a realistic profession or job. It took M-Woww awhile to come up with her dream job. You can prompt your child’s thinking with open-ended questions or simply give your child time to think. M-Woww took it pretty seriously. when i grow up steam activity for kids Step 2: Encourage your child to draw their dream job. Include details about what the dream job looks like but tell your child to not draw their self in the picture.

She finally decided to draw what it would look like if she was a ballerina teacher. when i grow up steam activity for kids Step 3: Have your child dress up as their chosen profession. Let your child design their outfit based on what props you already have at home. Have fun with it.

Step 4: Take a photo of your child dressed up in front of an empty wall (that will make it easier to cut).

Step 5: Print out the photo of your child. We found printing the photo at 4 x6 size worked best. Have your child cut their self out of the photo and glue on to the drawing. when i grow up steam activity for kids “I want to be a ballerina teacher when I grow up. ” – M-Woww (4 yrs old) “I want to be a builder when I grow up”. – Lil B 6 years old Maybe I should draw myself as a fashion designer…it’s never too late, right?
