I have always loved to doodle! Doodling allows time to create patterns and explore new ways to combine lines and shapes.
Not only will this drawing idea have your child thinking creatively and developing their problem solving skills but you also can easily tie in science and math connections, making it a great example of a STEAM learning activity for kids.
STEAM is the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to help make learning engaging and hands on for your child. You can read more about STEAM activities for kids here.
We also make a technology suggestion below the tutorial to help review the different types of lines in a fun and interactive way with your child!

Doodle Apple Creative Drawing Tutorial
Step 1: Draw an apple on the white paper. I encourage you if possible provide a real apple for your child to look at while drawing.
Step 2: Use a ruler to draw straight lines that intersect with each other while dividing the paper into different sections. Trace over your pencil lines with permanent marker.
Step 3: Fill each divided section with a different type of line pattern. For pattern inspiration, have your child look around their environment to identify different patterns they see to be inspired.
Step 4: Add your color!
STEAM LEARNING WITH SCIENCE, MATH, AND TECHONLOGY CONNECTIONS:
Science: Looking at a real apple while drawing it, will help your child develop their observation skills and thinking like a scientist. Ask your child how apples grow or why they think apples have a stem.
Math: Observe what type of shape an apple is similar to and make math connections. Drawing line segments and creating patterns are also ways this creative drawing idea and help connect to math lessons.
Technology: Review the different types of lines with your child using the The Artist Toolkit. This is a great interactive website that reviews the different elements of art including lines in a fun and engaging way for your child.
Activity Extensions:
Children may enjoy the challenge of not being able to repeat patterns in their artwork. This limitation will challenge your child to come up with new and creative ways to use line and shape to create different patterns in each section of the artwork.
