It is no secret I love a quick and easy STEAM art project for kids.
This project combines my love of tissue paper along with Art, Science, and Math connections.
Use different shapes and discover how colors mix together to extend your child’s learning.
I find working with tissue paper always turns out a positive result regardless of the age or skill level of the artist.
There results create a beautiful masterpiece! Read the full tutorial below.
Materials:
Tissue Paper
Glue (Prep the glue by pouring some into a cup and mix with a splash of water)
Brush
Canvas or Heavy Stock Paper
I happened to find square canvases at the local dollar store so we did use canvas for this project. However, M-Woww wanted to keep creating so she also collaged on paper too.
Tutorial:
Step 1: Cut tissue paper into shapes.
We mainly cut rectangles and squares. You can buy tissue paper already cut into shapes at your local craft store and save even more time.
Step 2: Lay tissue paper on the canvas and using a brush add a layer of your glue mixture on top of the tissue paper.
Step 3: Overlap! This is what creates all the interesting colors and textures.
SCIENCE CONNECTION: Discover how new colors appear when two colors overlap.
If a tissue paper shape tears or rips it only adds more texture so continue to glue it to the canvas.
Step 4: Let dry. Be sure to give your artwork time to dry. I usually let it sit overnight and then enjoy your beautiful work of art.
Vocabulary Extension: You may notice that we did one canvas in warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and one with cool colors (blue, purple, green).
Although Lil B and M-Woww are young for this concept it is never to early to develop vocabulary. We discussed what things the warm and cool colors reminded of us as we created our easy art project!

Can you please tell me what name or type of glue is to be used when painting with tissue paper. Went into the store to get supply’s and was overwhelmed by all the glue types to choose from. Thank you for your help.

Believe it or not we use regular Elmer’s school glue mixed with a little water. We have also used Mod Podge. Both work well and clean up easily!
