We are in week 3 of our Hand Made Summer Fun series. This week it is all about things that fly. For Whip it Up Wednesday we are playing with our food and representing things that fly (not actually throwing the food)! This turned out to be a great activity for the children while I cooked the rest of the meal. Read below for our tutorial.
Materials:
Slices of Pear
Carrot Stick
Tutorial:
Step 1: Slice a carrot and pear (I did this part for my young children).
Step 2: Arrange the food on the plate creating an invitation to play.
Step 3: We reviewed the things we have been talking about during our “everything that flies” week. We discussed things that fly in the air like birds, butterflies and airplanes.
Step 4: I challenged Lil b and M-Woww to build something that flies from the food on their plate. Lil B got right to work making an airplane. M-Woww played around and then asked for help to create a butterfly.
Above left is Lil B’s airplane and above right is M-Woww’s butterfly. And of course, I couldn’t help but make something too (although it doesn’t fly).
The best part is I was able to complete the rest of the meal with them busy creating things with their snack. You could do this activity with whatever fruit and veggies you happen to have on hand.
What can you build with your snack?
