DIY Kazoo’s
For this installment in our Hand Made Summer Fun Series (a series of fun activities for kids) we are making kazoos! To help celebrate M-Woww’s third birthday and go with our celebrate summer theme this week, I thought it would be fun to make a homemade musical instruments.
PARENT WARNING: You may want to think about the sound of a kazoo being played all afternoon before you make this…just warning you.
We were inspired by this tutorial from Buggy and Buddy to make our kazoos. Click over to Buggy and Buddy to read the tutorial. We did put our own twist on it by using tissue paper (yes, tissue paper again) to cover our cardboard tube. I found it was much easier to wrap tissue paper around the tube than wait for paint to dry. I also learned a hair tie can work just as well as a rubber band to hold the wax paper. Who would have guessed that we only had 1 rubber band in the house? We used a hair tie for the other kazoo and it not only added some glitz it held the wax paper in place just as well as the rubber band.
Exploring Sounds
We tried different length of tubes to see if that changed the sound. Do you think it changed the sound? Try it and see! You also could try adding more holes or covering holes too. We discussed how the wax paper makes the sound seem louder or amplifying it.
Perform with your Homemade Musical Instrument!
Playing a musical instrument is much more fun when you can perform and share your musical talent. We found a happy Aunt of Lil B and M-Woww to video chat with so we could show off our musical talents. Jellybean didn’t seem to mind she slept through the whole performance.
Have you made a musical instrument before? Share in the comments below!

These things are genius. I liked the tissue paper on them. I can imagine how the sound changed. We are big music instrument fans too. Just made few drums sets, so I know what you saying when you are warning the parents.

These are so pretty! I never thought to make them bigger. We made ones when my son was 2 (not pretty…LOL!) but they were like the one with the blue flower 🙂

My kids preferred the bigger ones but I believe it was because they would move it up and down almost like they were playing a saxophone! Thank you for commenting. 🙂

What fun. I remember making noises with wax paper over a comb. These are much cuter 🙂 I think kids of all ages would enjoy making these.

Lol! I have forgotten about the wax paper over a comb. I did that back in elementary school too! Thanks for sharing.

I absolutely love this idea! My child informed me this morning that she had to make an instrument for music class and it’s due tomorrow. We are going to give these a try, and it’s something my younger children can do as well, bonus!!

I hoped it worked out for your child’s music class! 🙂
