Thankful Turkey Corkboard

Creating Thanksgiving crafts with your children is a great time to reflect on what we are thankful for. Have you ever asked a preschooler what they are thankful for? You get some interesting responses.

M-Woww (3 years old):  I am thankful for apples, orange juice, Lucy (her doll), and blankets.

Lil B’ (5 years old): I am thankful for family, God and toys. “

We have previously done other thankful Thanksgiving crafts.  We have done a recycled thankful turkey, a thankful tree and even thankful name card/centerpiece.

We decided to do another thankful turkey but this time use a round cork board. What I like about using the cork board is that we can add to the board throughout the rest of the month. Every day we can reflect on what we are thankful for that day and add it to the cork board turkey.

We also recycled old artwork for the tail feathers. At this point in the school year you may have school clutter of papers stacked up, this is a great way to give old artwork a new purpose.

Read below for our tutorial.

Thanksgiving Crafts for Kids

Materials

Round Cork board (We had already one from Ikea)

Old art work (We re-used some of our easy diy marbled paper)

Brown, Red and Yellow Construction Paper

Googley Eyes

Scissors

Stapler (or tape)

Round object to trace

Pencil

Sticky Notes

Markers

Tutorial

Step 1: Cut your tail feathers. I drew the oval shape on the recycled artwork for the feathers and my preschooler cut the shapes out.

Step 2: Construct the turkey’s head. On the brown piece of construction paper, trace around your round object to make a circle for the turkey’s head.

Cut a triangle from the yellow construction paper for the beak.  On the red paper cut an apostrophe shaped piece (or upside down comma)  for the gobbler.  Add googley eyes.

Step 3: Attach your tail feather to the make of the round cork board. We used a stapler but you may wish to use tape if your cork board is thin.  Assemble the turkey face and also attach to the round cork board.

Step 4: Write the things you are thankful for on the sticky notes. Attach to the cork board and display! My 5 year old was able to write his own words but for my 3 year old, I wrote the word and she added her own decoration to the sticky note.

That’s so clever to use their artwork for the feathers – LOVE the marbled look! I have never seen a round corkboard like that before – how fun!

This is such a good idea. This year we’re doing a thankful tree, but I’ll definitely keep this in mind for next!
